Gun Safes and Home Security

Any gun owner knows that these items need to be stored and handled in a responsible manner, and gun safes are part of the plan for ensuring that firearms are kept out of the hands of children. You will also want to make sure that your guns are kept away from adults who may not be as careful as you are or from anyone who may break into your home.

Gun Safes Should Be Part of Your Firearms Security Plan

Gun safes do keep firearms away from people you don’t want to be handling them, but no single security measure is going to be 100 percent effective. One strategy that you will likely want to incorporate is that all guns in your collection should be unloaded and kept in a locked gun safe when not being used. Ammunition should be stored in a separate location from your guns, and it should be locked up as well.

When it comes to keeping guns away from children, even little ones can be taught that gun safes are out of bounds and not to be touched. Many young children are unable to distinguish between the genuine article and a toy when it comes to guns. Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean that a toddler can’t point one and pull the trigger.

Talk to Your Children About Guns, Safes and General Safety Concerns

Gun safety should be a topic that you discuss with your children and the ones who visit your home on a regular basis. All visitors should be aware that your gun collection is something that is something that they should be leaving alone.

Very young children can be taught that they should never play with a gun. In fact, they should learn that they shouldn’t even touch one. Instead, they should tell an adult what they have found. Older children can be directed to contact the police by calling 9-1-1 if they happen to find a gun.

Your children may be at risk if your neighbors own guns, as well. Before you allow them to spend time at someone else’s home, be sure to ask whether the homeowner has a gun collection (of any size) and what precautions they have taken to keep them away from children. If you are not satisfied by the answers, it’s better to be safe and not allow your children to visit than to run the risk of a tragic accident happening.

When you are looking at gun safes, make sure you choose a quality product. The money you spend will be well worth the investment if it brings you peace of mind. As an added precaution, combinations for gun safes should be kept hidden, away from the storage unit.
